Magnesium, zinc and vitamin B6: the minerals behind a good night

The herbs get the headlines on a sleep formula label. Valerian, passionflower, chamomile: they sound like the point of the product. But turn the bottle around and you will usually find a quieter trio near the bottom of the ingredient list, magnesium, zinc and vitamin B6, and they are there on purpose.

Start with magnesium, because the body certainly does. It is a working part in more than three hundred enzyme systems, including the ones your nerves and muscles use constantly. Magnesium contributes to normal nervous system function, normal muscle function and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, which is about as close as the careful language of nutrition science gets to calling something foundational. The catch is supply: nutrition surveys in New Zealand and overseas keep finding adults short of recommended magnesium intakes, partly because the richest sources, whole grains, legumes, nuts and leafy greens, are exactly the foods modern eating has trimmed back.

Zinc is the multi-tasker. Hundreds of enzymes carry a zinc atom at their core, and it supports everything from normal cognitive function to the everyday maintenance work your body schedules for the small hours. Unlike magnesium, the body keeps no meaningful zinc store, so it depends on a steady intake.

Vitamin B6 is the toolmaker. Your nerve cells communicate using chemical messengers, and B6 is a required helper in the reactions that make several of them. It also partners with the other two: a night formula that includes an ingredient like 5-HTP will often add B6 because the body needs it to put that ingredient to use.

Notice what connects all three. Winding down for the night is not a mood; it is a nervous-system process, run by enzymes and messenger chemicals that have to be built from raw materials. The minerals and B vitamins are those raw materials. Herbs may set the tone for the evening, but the unglamorous third of the label supplies the workshop.

Koru Sleep, the natural sleep support formula from Koru Nutrition in Christchurch, takes this belt-and-braces approach: magnesium, zinc and vitamin B6 sit alongside its herbal ingredients rather than instead of them.

None of this makes the trio exciting. Minerals never are. But if you have only ever judged a night formula by its botanical names, the bottom of the label deserves a second read. The quiet ingredients are often the ones holding the door.
